In the summer of 2008 I made a trip to Spain all by myself in search of my roots… my identity. On the first day beginning in Barcelona, while strolling the narrow streets of the gothic quarter, the three starting notes of Joaquín Rodrigo’s second movement of Concierto de Aranjuez reached to me. To any person with Hispanic roots and a basic musical culture, those three notes are enough, not only to recognize the Adagio, but also to imbue a strong identity with the Spanish culture. I followed the music and found the modest, yet skilled woman player, and stayed for as long as it lasted.
I have written before how much music induce my moods and how it is manifested in my work, and being alone and away from home, made the memory of that first encounter with Aranjuez the company I needed to have an enjoyable and inspirational tour, one full of suns, moons and stars.
Aranjuez (Adagio) (2009) is my humble tribute to the Hispanic, well represented by Joaquín Rodrigo, Joan Miró and the anonymous guitarist. I just hope they all approve.
